Profile

    Niranjanie Ratnayake is a Professor of Civil Engineering and was the Head of the Department of Civil Engineering at University of Moratuwa from June 2004 to June 2007. She graduated from University of Peradeniya with First Class Honours in Civil Engineering in January 1974, and has been an academic since then. She has a research Master of Engineering Degree from University of Wales, and is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka. She was the Director Postgraduate Studies of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Moratuwa, before she took up the post of Head of Department of Civil Engineering. Her field of specialization is Environmental Engineering, and has had training and experience in UK, India, USA, Canada, Malaysia, The Netherlands and Switzerland. She has also worked with academics and visited Universities in Finland, Greece (Crete), Spain, India and Thailand, on a project funded by the EU -Asia Link program. In Sri Lanka, in addition to teaching and research at the University, she has been working on many projects of national importance, as a Water Quality expert, Environmental Engineer, and EIA specialist, and has led several multidisciplinary teams on Environmental Impact Assessments and Strategic Environmental Assessments. She was also the Warden of the Female Hostels of University of Moratuwa during the period June 2000 to June 2008. She happens to be the first ever female Associate Professor and Professor of Engineering (any discipline) in the Sri Lankan university system. She was the Chairperson of the Women Engineers' Forum of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka in the sessions 2002/2003 and 2003/2004, and the Chairperson of the Civil Engineering Sectional Committee of the Institution for the session 2007/2008. On 14th September 2009 she delivered the Prestigious Engineer Professor EOE Pereira Memorial Lecture at the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka, on the topic "Sustainable Civil Engineering -Construction without Destruction"

    Niranjanie's husband is Lakshman Lloyd Ratnayake, who is a Senior Professor in the Civil Engineering Department, University of Moratuwa, and former Vice Chairman, University Grants Commission, Sri Lanka. Her elder son, Eranda Chamara (29) is a Doctor, and younger son, Dimuthu Tharanga (25) is a graduate in Computer Networking. Her daughter, Himali Udeshinie is studying Biological Sciences at University of Colombo. Her late father was Mr. Andrew Kodikara, who was employed at G.C. Roche & Co, and mother is Mrs. Soma Kodikara. She is the younger sister of Bandu Kodikara, Principal Gateway International College and Sriyani Kumarasiri, Dental Surgeon.
