“ Pahala Maradankadawala Village Rehabilitation Project – A Success Story ”


Pahala Maradankadawala is located in Giribawa Pradeshiya Sabha, in Kurunegala District. This was selected as Community-based Development Project – (Comprehensive Design Project) for the final year undergraduates in year 2007. This village had a tank where the spillway initially built by British Governors in 1931, was breached and collapsed due to extreme heavy rainfall in November 2003. As a result, the villagers encountered many problems in their paddy and other cultivation, day-to-day water requirements. When coupled with other problems such as inadequate infrastructure and road network, the life in the village gradually become difficult.

A report on a study carried out by the Department of Civil Engineering , University of Moratuwa on “Preparation of Faster & Bouncier Pitches using Local Soils” was handed over to Mr. D.S. de Silva, Chairman, Interim Committee for Sri Lanka Cricket at SLC headquarters on 21st July 2009. Sri Lanka as well as the Indian Sub-continent in general is home to slow and low pitches which tend to deteriorate quite quickly. As a result, our players often find it difficult to cope with faster and bouncier pitches found elsewhere in the world. The University of Moratuwa together with SLC undertook this ambitious project to modify local cricket pitches so that they could be made to be faster and bouncier in the hope of adding some variety to Sri Lankan pitches.

Civil Staff Member wins Prestigious Postgraduate Research Award - 2009 of the SLAAS


Dr Rangika Halwatura was awarded the 2009 GRC Postgraduate Research Merit Award by the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS) at the Inauguration of the SLAAS Annual Sessions held on Monday, 8th of December at the BMICH.
