About us
The Transport Engineering Division is an integral part
of the Department of Civil Engineering. It is comprised of five academic
staff who has obtained post-graduate qualifications in transport engineering
including traffic, highways and public transport. It is a well leading
academics group of Transport & Highway Engineering in Sri Lanka The
Division is responsible for conducting lectures for civil engineering
students. The Division also conducting two postgraduate courses - PG Diploma/MEng
in Highway & Traffic Engineering and PG Diploma/MSc in Transportation.
In addition every staff member present in the division undertakes the
supervision of at least one undergraduate project for each batch of Final
Year students, and several postgraduate projects. Furthermore, the academic
staff undertakes the supervision of full-time PhD/M.Phil students also.
An increased Transportation Engineering component was introduced to the
BSc Civil Engineering curricular in 1992. Under the new syllabus, specialized
transport courses are taught at third year and fourth year levels. The
third year subject covers highway setting out, construction, design and
maintenance and an introduction to transport and traffic engineering theory.
The optional fourth year subject imparts theoretical knowledge of traffic
signal design, traffic engineering, highway design and transport planning
and operations. Field work including advanced computer packages such as
TRIPS, TransPlan are introduced and practical are designed to gather experience
in conducting basic traffic and transport surveys and studies.
In addition to conducting the undergraduate and postgraduate course of
studies, the Division of Transportation Engineering has been carrying
out a fully fledged research and consultancy programs. Emphasis has been
on applied research and the determination of applications for Sri Lanka.
Research is also carried out at different levels of the academic program
in order to inculcate the principles and practice of research among the
students. The TED also undertakes transport studies and surveys particularly
for state sector organizations. An emphasis is made on collaborative studies
such that the capability of such organizations and its officers in carrying
out such studies is also developed.
