Born at Galle on 19-12-1945, he graduated in 1967 from University of Peradeniya with an honours degree in Civil Engineering. He obtained his doctorate from University of Sheffield in 1973, and his design office experience from T.Harley Heddow and Partness,Edinburgh,UK in 1981.

His career commenced at Ceylon College of Higher Technology, Katubedda in 1968, and became an Assistant Lecturer of Katubedda Campus in 1970. He obtained successive promotions to Lecturer (1973), Senior Lecturer (1979), Associate Professor (1985), Professor (1990), and Senior Professor (1995). During this period he has also taught and researched at University of Sheffield, University of Edinburgh, Loughborough University of Technology, Drexel University and University of Manitoba. Presently he is the Senior Professor of Civil Engineering specializing in Structural Engineering at University of Moratuwa, and is also a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka, and a past Vice-President of the Society of Structural Engineers, Sri Lanka.

He is a founder member of the University of Moratuwa, and was the first to obtain merit promotions to the grades of Associate Professor, and Professor at this University. He was a Fulbright Fellow, Commonwealth Fellow, ILO Fellow, and a UN Fellow. In addition, he won the E.O.E. Pereira Prize, and the S.D. & C.C. prize of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka,twice and three times respectively. The Sri Lanka Standards Institution also awarded him a gold medal for his contributions to standardization, and he also won five awards for outstanding research performances from University of Moratuwa. He was also awarded the prestigious CVCD award for Most Outstanding Researches in Technology and Allied Sciences at a Sri Lankan University in 2006.

He is married to Nirmali and has two daughters, Chirani and Thushari. As a hobby, he collects pictures of various types of structures and sustains a deep interest on Management and Buddhism.
