PROFILE

Professor Malik Ranasinghe is a Senior Professor in Civil Engineering at the University of Moratuwa (UoM) and Member of the University Grants Commission. He is a Chartered Engineer, International Professional Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka, Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, Sri Lanka, Fellow of the Institute of Project Managers, Sri Lanka and Graduate Member of Sri Lanka Institute of Directors. He is Deputy Chairman of Sampath Bank PLC, and independent non-executive Director of Textured Jersey Lanka PLC, Resus Energy PLC, Access Engineering PLC and United Motors Lanka PLC.

Prof. Ranasinghe is the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Moratuwa. He is former Chairman of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Directors (CVCD) of Sri Lanka, a former Council Member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), past Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and former Chairman, Centre of Excellence in Project Management at the UoM. He is also a former Fellow of the National University of Singapore, a former independent non-executive Director of the Colombo Stock Exchange and Lanka IOC PLC.

Prof. Ranasinghe graduated in Civil Engineering from the UoM (1984), and obtained his MASc (1986) and PhD (1990) from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada in Civil Engineering Economics as a Canadian Commonwealth Scholar. In 1993 he attended a postgraduate certificate program in Environmental Economics and Policy Analysis at the Harvard Institute for International Development of the Harvard University, U.S.A.

Prof. Ranasinghe’s research focus is to combine civil engineering economics and environmental economics with project management. He has published over 120 research publications, of which over 70 are international refereed publications. Prof. Ranasinghe’s Hirsch Index (h Index) for research publications is 15.

In 1999, the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS) honoured Prof. Ranasinghe with the General Research Committee Award for Outstanding Contribution to Sri Lankan Science. The University Grants Commission and Hiran Tillekaratne Research Fund recognised his research with the award for Outstanding Postgraduate Research – 2000 in the academic discipline of Engineering for the period 1975 to 1999. In 2000, he was awarded the Prof. E O E Pereira Award for the Best Paper presented at the Annual Sessions 1998/99 of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka. The UoM recognised his outstanding research contributions with nine (09) annual awards for Appreciation for Outstanding Research. The National Science Foundation honoured him with a SUSRED Award under PhD category in 2012. The Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Directors (CVCD) of Sri Lanka awarded its biennial Most Outstanding Senior Researcher in Technology and related Sciences including Engineering, Architecture, Quantity Surveying and Information Technology award in 2012. In 2014 Emerald Literati Network recognized his publication with the Highly Commended Paper Award 2014 for Built Environment Project and Asset Management journal.

Prof. Ranasinghe was awarded the Trinity Prize for Engineering for 2004 in recognition of the outstanding contributions made to his chosen profession. The World Education Congress 2012 held in Mumbai, India honoured him with the award for Outstanding Contribution to Education. At the 4th Asia’s Best B-School Awards 2013 held in Singapore, Prof. Ranasinghe was honoured with the prestigious Education Leadership Award.

Since 2003 he has been involved with the corporate sector as an Independent non-Executive Director of Public Listed Companies (PLCs). At present he is the Deputy Chairman of Sampath Bank PLC, and independent non-Executive Director of Textured Jersey Lanka PLC, Access Engineering PLC, Resus Energy PLC and United Motors Lanka PLC. He was a former non-executive Director of the Colombo Stock Exchange, Hemas Power PLC and Lanka IOC PLC.
